During the later vedic period legal institutions were also coming into sharper focus. The king administered justice and wielded the rod of punishment. Among the crimes enumerated are theft, robbery,adultery, incest, abduction, killing of man. Killing of cows, slaying of Brahmana, drinking intoxicating liquor, treachery, etc. were punishable by death. Petty offences were left to village judges". For evidence, the eye-witness was more important than the informer.
