Around 1750, before the British conquered Bengal, India was by far the world’s largest producer of cotton textiles. According to some estimates, India accounted for over 25 percent of world trade. In the 1750s, mostly fine cotton and silk were exported from India to markets in Europe, Asia, and Africa; by the 1850s raw materials, which chiefly consisted of raw cotton, opium, and indigo, accounted for most of India's exports
