Goldene is an ultra-thin sheet of gold, only one atom thick, created through a specialized process. This makes gold the first metal to be formulated into (freestanding) 2D sheets. The process involved sandwiching an atomic monolayer of silicon between layers of titanium carbide. Then gold was deposited on top of this sandwich structure, the gold atoms diffused into the material and replaced the silicon atoms, forming a trapped monolayer of gold atoms.. Goldene can be used as a catalyst in the electronics industry, carbon dioxide conversion, hydrogen production, and more.
