Context: Recently, the International Organization of Aids to Marine Navigation was in the news as India was elected to the Vice Presidency of the International Organization of Aids to Marine Navigation (IALA) in Singapore.

Statement 1 is not correct: IALA was originally established in 1957 as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) to improve and harmonize aids to marine navigation globally. It officially became an Intergovernmental Organization (IGO) in 2024, after a convention was ratified by 34 member states.

Statement 2 is correct: India has been a member of IALA since 1957, actively contributing to its mission of promoting safe, efficient, and sustainable marine navigation.
