The Tripartite Struggle (8th-10th century CE) was a prolonged conflict between three powerful dynasties the Palas (Bengal), the Pratiharas (Rajasthan), and the Rashtrakutas (Deccan) for control over Kannauj, a strategically and commercially significant city in North India.

Statement 1 is correct: The first phase of the tripartite struggle began with a battle between Dharmapala (Pala king) and Vatsaraja (Pratihara ruler) at Prayaga (modern-day Allahabad), around 790 CE.

Statement 2 is correct: After the defeat of Dharmapala, Vatsaraja of the Pratiharas gained control of Kannauj, a politically strategic region. However, his control did not last long due to subsequent conflicts with Rashtrakutas, led by Dhruva Dharavarsha, who later defeated Vatsaraja.
