Context: It's in news as September 20, 2024 marked the centenary of the announcement of the discovery of the Indus Valley civilisation, which now spans 2,000 sites across 1.5 million sq. km in India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan
Daya Ram Sahni led the excavation of Harappa in 1921, marking one of the earliest discoveries
of the Indus Valley Civilization. R. D. Banerjee discovered and excavated Mohenjo-Daro in
1922, which revealed advanced urban planning. S. R. Rao excavated Lothal in Gujarat in 1955, where he uncovered a dockyard and fire altars.
All three are thus directly associated with the discovery and excavation of major Harappan sites.
