The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) is a pivotal initiative launched by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to address the growing threat of cybercrime in India. This initiative aims to enhance the coordination among law enforcement agencies, boost cybercrime investigation skills, and elevate public awareness about online safety.
The I4C was officially sanctioned on October 5, 2018, and was inaugurated on January 10, 2020, by the Home Minister. The creation of I4C stemmed from the necessity to tackle the surge in cybercrimes, fueled by the widespread use of the internet and the rapid pace of technological advancements. An Expert Group, assembled by the MHA, highlighted the need for a central body like I4C to enhance coordination and cybersecurity strategies.
I4C operates with specific goals, including:
I4C plays a crucial role in providing real-time cybercrime intelligence and fostering inter-agency collaboration. It offers training in areas such as cyber forensics, investigations, and cyber hygiene. Moreover, I4C acts as an early warning system to detect and avert emerging cyber threats.
Citizens can report cybercrimes through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (www.cybercrime.gov.in), which is overseen by I4C. This platform processes complaints related to financial fraud, cyberbullying, hacking, and online harassment, connecting them with the appropriate law enforcement bodies.
In 2023, I4C played a significant role in dismantling a major online fraud network that spanned multiple states. By analyzing digital footprints and collaborating with state police, law enforcement successfully apprehended the perpetrators, thus preventing further financial harm.
I4C has launched dedicated programs to combat cyberstalking, online harassment, and child exploitation. It has also strengthened partnerships with social media platforms and law enforcement agencies to swiftly identify and remove harmful content.
I4C is actively involved in public awareness campaigns about digital safety. It conducts cybersecurity workshops and promotes safe online practices through social media and educational programs.
Looking ahead, I4C aims to continue expanding its technological capabilities, forge collaborations with international organizations, and develop AI-driven tools to detect and prevent cybercrimes more effectively.
