The Asiatic Society of Mumbai (ASM), established in 1804 as the Literary Society of Bombay, is one of India’s oldest cultural and research institutions. It has long served as a hub for scholars, historians, and administrators in both colonial and post-colonial India. Today, it houses an extraordinary collection of over 100,000 books, along with rare manuscripts, ancient coins, and historical maps.
The ASM’s treasures include the original manuscript of Dante’s Divine Comedy, Sanskrit classics, Persian texts, and the famous Wadia Maps of Bombay (18th century). It also preserves the Oriental Manuscripts Collection, a priceless resource for researchers worldwide.
Beyond its archives, the society actively organizes lectures, research programs, and heritage awareness activities. Its efforts ensure that historical knowledge and cultural heritage remain accessible to present and future generations.
The society is housed in the historic Town Hall building in Mumbai, renowned for its Greco-Roman architecture and iconic grand steps. This landmark continues to stand as one of the city’s most important cultural symbols.
The 221-year journey of the Asiatic Society of Mumbai reflects India’s enduring pursuit of knowledge, heritage preservation, and intellectual growth. It remains a living legacy of scholarship and cultural pride.
