An Overview of the INDIAai Mission

Launched on March 7, 2024, the INDIAai Mission is a significant initiative by the Government of India. It aims to enhance the nation's standing in the field of artificial intelligence while ensuring its benefits are accessible to a broad audience. With a robust financial plan and a focus on key development areas, this mission is poised to transform India's AI landscape.

Financial Commitment and Focus Areas

The mission boasts a substantial financial outlay of ₹10,300 crore, allocated over a span of five years. This budget supports the creation of AI infrastructure, innovative projects, and the nurturing of AI startups. The primary focus areas include the development of computing infrastructure, large language models (LLMs), AI-driven public service applications, and fostering a supportive environment for AI startups.

Progress in Computing Infrastructure

The mission has made significant strides in developing computing infrastructure. A plan to develop 18,693 graphic processing units (GPUs) is underway, with 10,000 GPUs already deployed for rendering complex graphics and images. Additionally, 10 companies have been selected to supply these GPUs, and a repository containing over 339 types of non-personal datasets has been established to support this infrastructure.

Innovative AI Models and Tools

Under the INDIAai Mission, several pivotal AI models and tools have been developed:

  • Bhashini: An AI tool for real-time translation of Indian languages.
  • BharatGen: A generative AI model aimed at improving public service delivery.
  • Sarvam–1AI: An open-source LLM that supports 10 Indian languages.

Advancements in AI Talent Development

India has made remarkable progress in AI talent development. Currently, the country accounts for 16% of the global AI talent pool, with a staggering 263% increase in AI talent concentration since 2016. Moreover, the AI-skilled workforce has expanded 14 times between 2016 and 2023, highlighting India's growing prominence in the global AI arena.

The Future of India's AI Industry

Looking ahead, the AI industry in India is projected to reach a valuation of $28.8 billion by 2025. In terms of global AI skill rankings, India stands first with a skill penetration score of 2.8, as reported by the Stanford AI Index 2024. This achievement underscores India's leadership and commitment to advancing in the field of artificial intelligence.

As the INDIAai Mission continues to unfold, it promises to propel India to the forefront of AI innovation and capability, ensuring a future where AI is a cornerstone of national development.
