The newly completed infrastructure project between Guwahati in Assam and Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh promises to provide year-round connectivity. This pivotal development aims to enhance strategic mobility along the sensitive India-China border.
The project comprises two main tunnels:
Remarkably, this project is acclaimed as the longest bi-lane tunnel globally at an altitude of 13,116 feet.
This infrastructure marvel provides all-weather access to Tawang, a location of significant strategic importance near the India-China border. It facilitates the movement of troops, supplies, and machinery throughout the year, significantly enhancing the Indian Army's strategic mobility along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
Additionally, the project reduces travel time between Tawang and Dirang by 12 kilometers, resulting in a time saving of approximately 90 minutes.
The construction of the tunnels posed several challenges due to the difficult terrain and high altitude. Furthermore, delays were encountered due to a cloudburst in July of the previous year. These challenges led to a third-party audit following a tunnel collapse elsewhere in India, ensuring the project's safety and reliability.
The project has been successfully completed and is ready for inauguration. It stands as a testament to engineering excellence, promising to bolster connectivity and strategic advantages in the region.
