The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Social Justice and Empowerment recently released an eye-opening report titled "Drug abuse among young persons: Problems and solutions." This August 2023 publication sheds light on the alarming spread of drug addiction across various age groups in India, including adults, young adults, and notably, children.
The report reveals a shocking increase in drug abuse among children aged 10-17 years. It highlights the prevalence of opioids, sedatives, and inhalants among this young demographic across numerous states. Particularly affected regions include Punjab, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, NCT of Delhi, Odisha, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.
In Punjab alone, the report identifies a staggering 6.97 lakh children aged 10-17 years as victims of drug addiction. Among these, 18,100 are reported to consume cocaine, while a significant 3.43 lakh are using opioid drugs, including heroin. Additionally, 72,000 children are known to use inhalants.
This report serves as a crucial call to action for policymakers, social workers, and the community at large, urging them to address the growing issue of drug abuse and implement effective strategies for prevention and rehabilitation.
