In a remarkable discovery, scientists have identified a new species of owlfly named Protidricerus albocapitatus in Kerala's lush forests. This marks the first finding of its kind in 134 years, enriching India's entomological diversity.
The Protidricerus albocapitatus was found in the Nedumkayam forest, located in the Malappuram district of Kerala. This owlfly belongs to the Myrmeleontidae family and the Neuroptera order. With this discovery, Kerala is now home to five known species of owlflies, contributing to India's total of 37 species.
This newly discovered owlfly is characterized by its white tufted head and distinctive clubbed antennae, making it a unique addition to the region's fauna.
Owlflies are primarily active during dusk, when they take to the skies as aerial predators, feeding on other insects. As a defense mechanism, they emit a strong, musk-like chemical to ward off potential threats.
These insects typically lay eggs in clusters at the ends of limbs and twigs. The female owlfly diligently creates a protective shield beneath the eggs to safeguard them from predators.
