The PARAM Rudra is a groundbreaking supercomputer developed indigenously under India’s National Supercomputing Mission (NSM). This initiative, part of the "Make in India" campaign, aims to elevate the nation's scientific research and innovation capabilities. The supercomputer is operational in major cities like Pune, Delhi, and Kolkata, supporting advanced scientific research across diverse fields.
The NSM is a strategic effort by the Indian government to enhance the nation's supercomputing prowess. It addresses the growing need for supercomputing in education, research, and business sectors. The mission's first milestone, PARAM Shivay, was inaugurated at IIT (BHU) in 2019, marking the beginning of a new era in India’s technological landscape.
The HPC system, a high-performance computing framework, is a vital component of this initiative. Inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi, it aims to advance weather and climate research in India. The system is operational at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune and the National Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) in Noida, with an extensive investment of ₹850 crore.
The PARAM Rudra supercomputers are instrumental in propelling research in key scientific fields like physics, astronomy, and earth sciences. By equipping Indian researchers with cutting-edge technology, these supercomputers facilitate complex calculations and simulations, thus establishing India as a leader in global scientific innovation.
The development of PARAM Rudra represents a significant stride towards self-reliance in supercomputing technology. By fostering local development under the Make in India initiative, India is diminishing its reliance on foreign technology, thereby fortifying its technological infrastructure.
