The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) is a UN agency established in 1950 to support the relief and human development of Palestinian refugees. It operates in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip, providing essential services such as education, healthcare, and social services.
India has donated $2.5 million to UNRWA as part of its annual commitment of $5 million for the fiscal year 2023-24.
This donation is crucial, especially as UNRWA faces severe financial challenges stemming from the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the suspension of funds from some major donors, including the US and UK. The financial strain has significantly hindered UNRWA's ability to provide essential services to Palestinian refugees.
The funds will primarily support UNRWA's core programs, including education, healthcare, relief, and social services for Palestinian refugees. The agency aims to address the increased demand for these vital services amidst the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
Since 2018, India has significantly bolstered its financial contributions to UNRWA, providing a total of $27.5 million over recent years. In addition to financial support, India has delivered humanitarian assistance, including 32 tonnes of supplies, to aid the Palestinian people.
UNRWA has welcomed India’s generous contribution, emphasizing its importance during these challenging times. The agency has acknowledged India's consistent support and has called upon other traditional donors to increase their contributions.
The suspension of funds from major donors like the US and UK is attributed to various geopolitical and policy-related reasons. This situation has exacerbated the financial difficulties faced by UNRWA, making contributions from countries like India even more critical.
