However, the cultivation of Darjeeling Mandarin Orange has faced significant challenges over the last 15 years. Factors such as virus infections, specifically the Citrus Tristeza virus, along with pest attacks from aphids and fruit flies, have led to a decline in production. Addressing these threats is crucial for the sustainability of this unique fruit.
The exceptional sweetness, aroma, and flavor of the Darjeeling Mandarin Orange are primarily attributed to the unique climatic conditions and soil composition of the Darjeeling and Kalimpong hills. These qualities make the fruit stand out among other varieties.
West Bengal now boasts a total of 33 Geographical Indication (GI) tags, which include 11 agricultural and horticultural products. The Darjeeling region has successfully added its second GI-tagged product, following the renowned Darjeeling Tea, which received its GI recognition in 2004.
