India’s space agency, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), has achieved a major milestone with the successful launch of its heaviest communication satellite ever — CMS-03, weighing 4,410 kg. The satellite was launched aboard the LVM3 (Launch Vehicle Mark-3) rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota.
A communication satellite acts like a massive “relay tower” positioned in space. It helps transmit signals for television, internet, mobile communication, and defence networks across vast distances — especially in remote or maritime regions where terrestrial cables or towers cannot reach.
