Public health experts are advocating for the inclusion of Hepatitis A in India's universal immunisation programme due to the rising number of outbreaks across various states in the country.
Hepatitis A is a viral infection that causes inflammation of the liver. It is prevalent in regions such as Latin America, Africa, Asia, and the Western Pacific. Unlike other forms of hepatitis, Hepatitis A does not lead to chronic liver disease but can present with symptoms ranging from mild to severe.
Hepatitis A is primarily transmitted through the faecal-oral route, often via contaminated food or water. Close physical contact with an infected individual can also spread the virus.
While there is no specific antiviral medication for Hepatitis A, treatment focuses on symptom management, hydration, and proper nutrition to support the liver during recovery.
