Revolutionary Indigenous Innovations by the Department of Atomic Energy

On November 18, 2025, the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) announced two groundbreaking innovations: ColoNoX Wound Dressing, India's first nitric-oxide wound dressing, and Ferrocarbonatite (BARC B1401), the country's first indigenously developed Certified Reference Material (CRM) for Rare Earth Elements (REE). These advancements are pivotal in supporting India's Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative and enhancing critical-mineral capabilities.

Introduction of ColoNoX Wound Dressing

Developed in collaboration with Cologenesis Private Limited, ColoNoX is a nitric-oxide releasing dressing crafted by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) under the DAE. It is specifically designed for treating Diabetic Foot Ulcers (DFU) and has undergone successful Phase II and III clinical trials. The dressing utilizes a collagen hydrogel that not only absorbs exudate but also reduces pain and promotes wound healing through its antimicrobial and regenerative properties.

The product has achieved approval from the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) for commercial production by Cologenesis, marking a significant milestone in healthcare innovation.

Ferrocarbonatite (BARC B1401): A Mineral Innovation

Ferrocarbonatite (BARC B1401) was jointly developed by the National Center for Compositional Characterization of Materials (NCCCM) – BARC and the Atomic Minerals Directorate (AMD), Hyderabad. It adheres to stringent International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards, ensuring high analytical precision and international credibility. This CRM contains certified concentrations of 13 Rare Earth Elements (REEs) and 6 major elements, making it an essential calibration material for research, mining, refining, and industrial applications.

This innovation is particularly significant as it is only the fourth CRM of its kind globally, substantially enhancing India's ability to analyze strategic minerals independently, reducing reliance on imports.

About the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE)

Under the leadership of Secretary Dr. Ajit Kumar Mohanty, the Department of Atomic Energy is headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, and was established in 1954. The DAE continues to drive transformative advancements in both healthcare and mineral sciences, reinforcing India's position on the global stage.
