The 19th century marked a significant period for Marathi literature, characterized by the influence of Western thoughts and a growing sense of Marathi identity. This era underlined the necessity for a unified platform where literary discussions could flourish and the evolving literature could be promoted.
Justice Mahadev Govind Ranade, a distinguished social reformer and judge, recognized the need for such a platform. He believed that uniting writers would foster creativity and reinforce the Marathi language and culture.
In 1878, Ranade organized the inaugural Granthakar Sammelan (Conference of Authors) in Pune. This initial gathering focused on reviewing Marathi publications, discussing improvements in literary quality, and encouraging the dissemination of books and reading.
Following the first meeting, the Sammelan was held sporadically, with gatherings taking place in 1885, 1905, and 1906. This demonstrated a growing interest in formalizing this literary assembly.
In 1924, the establishment of the Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Mahamandal marked a pivotal moment. This organization assumed responsibility for organizing the Sammelan annually, providing it with necessary structure and continuity.
Today, the Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan continues to be a vital force in Marathi literary and cultural life, a testament to the early efforts and contributions of numerous writers and thinkers over the years.
