The Mangrove Alliance for Climate (MAC) was officially launched during COP 27 at Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, in 2022 by the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This initiative aims to foster the conservation and restoration of mangrove ecosystems globally, bringing together nations to advocate for the critical importance of mangroves in addressing climate change.
Mangroves are recognized as some of the most carbon-rich forests in the tropics, capable of sequestering four to five times more carbon emissions than terrestrial tropical forests. They serve as natural barriers against sea-level rise and extreme weather events, including cyclones and storm surges. Thus, their preservation is vital for both climate change adaptation and mitigation.
In the context of the blue economy, mangroves are foundational to the livelihoods of millions in tropical coastal regions. They provide essential ecosystem services, including nursery grounds for fish, protection against coastal erosion, and resources that support local fisheries.
India is poised to leverage its extensive experience in mangrove restoration to enhance the global knowledge base surrounding mangrove conservation. The nation is dedicated to integrating mangroves into its national REDD+ programs, aiming to fulfill its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) targets. These targets include creating an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent through forest and tree cover by the year 2030.
The high carbon sequestration capacity of mangrove forests positions them as a strategic asset for India in achieving its NDC under the Paris Agreement. By promoting afforestation and preventing deforestation of mangroves, India can develop new carbon sinks, thereby aiding its commitment to reducing emissions and combating climate change.
International cooperation facilitated by the MAC is essential for effective cross-boundary conservation efforts. It enables knowledge exchange and mobilizes necessary resources for mangrove restoration. Such collaboration assists nations in meeting international climate goals, ensuring the sustainability of these vital ecosystems.
Mangroves play a significant role in achieving carbon neutrality by absorbing and storing substantial amounts of carbon, which helps reduce global greenhouse gas concentrations. Through conservation and restoration, the capacity of mangroves to act as effective carbon sinks can be enhanced, supporting countries in their efforts toward carbon neutrality.
