Krishi Sakhis: A Collaborative Effort in Rural Advancement

The Krishi Sakhis initiative is a noteworthy collaboration between India’s Ministry of Rural Development and Agriculture Ministry. This program uniquely combines agricultural enhancement with women’s empowerment, emphasizing the promotion of natural farming practices.

Joint Launch by Ministries

The training program for Krishi Sakhis was launched under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM). This initiative represents a synergistic effort between two key ministries, aiming to uplift rural communities.

Empowering Women with Natural Farming

The primary goal is to train 50,000 Krishi Sakhis, providing them with certification in natural farming. This phased training is managed by the National Centre for Organic and Natural Farming (NCONF), ensuring comprehensive education and skill development.

Training and Certification Process

As a pivotal institution under the agriculture ministry, NCONF has developed detailed training modules. These have been reviewed by the National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE) to ensure quality and efficacy.

Understanding DAY-NRLM

Originally launched as Aajeevika-NRLM in 2011, it was renamed DAY-NRLM. This flagship poverty alleviation program focuses on reducing poverty through self-employment and skilled wage employment, thereby enhancing the livelihoods of the rural poor.

Scale and Reach

Targeting approximately 10 crore rural households, it stands as one of the largest initiatives of its kind globally. The approach involves organizing one woman from each household into self-help groups (SHGs) and federations. This strategy aims at fostering sustainable livelihoods, financial inclusion, and an improved quality of life.

Core Components and Coverage

DAY-NRLM encompasses social mobilization, financial inclusion, sustainable livelihoods, and social development. It extends across most states and Union Territories, involving over 9.54 crore women in SHGs.

Implications for Government Civil Services Examination

Candidates should understand the objectives and strategies of DAY-NRLM and the role of Krishi Sakhis in empowering rural women. Recognizing the integration of rural development, agriculture, and women's empowerment is crucial for examinations.

Linking to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

This initiative connects to SDGs, particularly in areas like poverty alleviation, gender equality, and sustainable agriculture. It showcases a holistic approach to rural development, crucial for candidates preparing for government civil services examinations.
