These high-tech devices are being utilized for precision spraying of pesticides and fertilizers, seed dispersal, crop health monitoring, and water management. Such applications not only save time but also reduce costs and enhance productivity. For instance, drone-assisted pesticide spraying on a 10-acre farm can be completed in just 30 minutes, a task that would traditionally take 8 hours manually.
The use of drones in agriculture offers numerous advantages:
Under the Kisan Drone Scheme, drones provide a reliable solution to challenges such as manual labor shortages and poor mechanization. These drones facilitate real-time crop monitoring, water conservation (up to 85%), and improved crop health. Consequently, this has resulted in a 60% increase in yield and a 20% reduction in crop loss.
The government plays a crucial role in supporting drone usage through initiatives like the Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanisation (SMAM), which incentivizes drone adoption. This includes subsidies, R&D funding, and customized solutions tailored for Indian conditions to help farmers transition to this advanced technology.
Several states such as Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Tamil Nadu are at the forefront of drone adoption. These regions benefit from robust government support and private initiatives like Garuda Aerospace's Kisan Drones and IG Drones' innovations.
Despite the benefits, there are challenges to widespread drone adoption:

With supportive government policies and contributions from the private sector, drones have the potential to transform farming by enhancing resilience to climate challenges, improving productivity, and reducing costs.
