What is the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS)?

The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) is a long-term initiative launched in 2022 by the Ministry of Railways aimed at modernizing and redeveloping over 1,300 railway stations across India. The primary goal is to transform these stations into vibrant city centres equipped with enhanced facilities and improved connectivity.

Recent Developments Under ABSS

On May 22, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 103 redeveloped railway stations spanning 86 districts across 18 states and Union Territories. This notable event included the physical inauguration of the Deshnoke railway station in Rajasthan, along with 102 stations inaugurated virtually.

Key Features of the Redeveloped Stations

The newly redeveloped stations boast several modern features, including:

  • Modernized waiting halls, toilets, ticketing, and entry points
  • Enhanced signage and information systems
  • Facilities for individuals with disabilities
  • Executive lounges, business spaces, and kiosks promoting local products under the ‘One Station One Product’ scheme
  • Lifts, escalators, and free Wi-Fi access

Notable Redeveloped Stations

Some of the significant stations that have undergone redevelopment include:

  • Deshnoke (Rajasthan): Serves as a pivotal stop for pilgrims visiting the Karni Mata Temple
  • Warangal (Telangana): Features a design inspired by the Kakatiya era
  • Thawte (Bihar): Showcases beautiful Mithila murals
  • Gondia (Maharashtra): Inspired by the rich Gond art
  • Ayodhya Dham (Uttar Pradesh): Previously redeveloped under the same scheme

The Scale and Financial Outlay of ABSS

The redevelopment of the 103 stations was executed at an approximate cost of ₹1,100 crore. The financial allocations for the scheme are as follows:

  • ₹8,000 crore allocated for FY 2023–24
  • ₹12,992 crore projected for FY 2024–25
  • ₹12,000 crore earmarked for FY 2025–26

Coverage of the Full Scheme

ABSS encompasses over 1,300 identified stations, with the leading states being Uttar Pradesh (157 stations), Maharashtra (132 stations), and West Bengal (101 stations).

Additional Railway Projects Launched

Alongside the station redevelopments, PM Modi inaugurated several railway line projects, including:

  • Suratgarh-Phalodi (336 Rkm)
  • Phulera-Degana (109 Rkm)
  • Udaipur-Himmatnagar (210 Rkm)
  • Phulera-Jaisalmer (157 Rkm)
  • Samdari-Barmer (129 Rkm)

Additionally, the foundation for doubling the Churu-Sadulpur rail line (58 Rkm) was laid.

The Broader Vision Behind ABSS

The overarching aim of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is to establish modern, accessible, and clean railway stations that not only reflect local art and heritage but also function as vital transport, business, and cultural hubs.
