Lake-effect snow is a meteorological phenomenon that occurs when cold air passes over warmer lake waters. This process allows the cold air to pick up moisture and heat from the lakes, leading to the formation of snow clouds. These clouds are responsible for heavy snowfall in areas located downwind of the lake.
Lake-effect snow is most commonly observed near large bodies of water, particularly the Great Lakes in the United States. States such as New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Michigan frequently experience this weather phenomenon, leading to significant snowfall during the winter months.
Under optimal meteorological conditions, lake-effect snow can be remarkably intense, with snowfall rates reaching 5–8 cm per hour or more. A notable example occurred in November 2022, when certain regions near Buffalo, New York, were buried under over 2 meters of snow within a three-day period.
Forecasting lake-effect snow presents unique challenges for meteorologists. The intensity and location of snowfall can be heavily influenced by slight changes in wind direction. Even minor shifts can dramatically alter where the snow falls, making accurate predictions challenging for weather forecasters.
