The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) is a regional organization formed in 1997, bringing together seven countries—India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Thailand. Its primary goal is to enhance economic cooperation and integration among South Asian and Southeast Asian countries.
The Bay of Bengal is strategically vital due to its location, acting as a bridge between South and Southeast Asia. It holds significant economic importance as a maritime route for trade and energy supplies. However, the region faces growing security challenges, including political instability in member states, maritime security threats, climate change, and the rise of non-traditional security issues like human trafficking and piracy.
BIMSTEC’s focus initially centered on trade and economic cooperation, but over time, the need for security collaboration has increased. Since 2016, BIMSTEC leaders have prioritized regional security, with a focus on law enforcement, intelligence-sharing, disaster management, and military cooperation. The National Security Chiefs’ meetings have been significant in creating a platform for dialogue on security-related issues. For example, military exercises and disaster management drills involving BIMSTEC members have strengthened cooperation.
BIMSTEC has made strides in addressing security challenges, particularly by holding military and disaster management exercises. However, there is a need for further institutional cooperation to manage ongoing threats. Greater coordination in areas like disaster management, counter-terrorism, and maritime security will be crucial. Additionally, member countries must work together to address political sensitivities and develop a robust security framework that benefits the entire region.
BIMSTEC plays a critical role in ensuring the security of the Bay of Bengal, but its future relevance depends on continued engagement and cooperation among its members. Strengthening security collaboration alongside economic integration will help the region address the growing threats to stability, ensuring a prosperous and secure future.
