The Indian government has established a clear roadmap for the integration of compressed biogas with natural gas, particularly targeting its application within the transportation and domestic sectors. This initiative aims to enhance the adoption of CBG while also decreasing the nation's reliance on imported natural gas.
This policy is designed to stimulate demand for CBG by imposing minimum blending percentages with natural gas. The initiative sets a benchmark starting at 5% for the fiscal year 2025-26, with plans to incrementally increase this percentage each year.
The production of CBG from biomass signifies a significant reduction in dependence on fossil fuels. Furthermore, it plays a crucial role in waste management and contributes to the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions by making effective use of organic waste.
By promoting CBG blending, the initiative aims to conserve foreign exchange by cutting down on imports of liquefied natural gas. Additionally, it seeks to foster a circular economy by leveraging agricultural and urban waste, which may lead to the creation of new industries and job opportunities.
