Quick commerce (Q-commerce) is a fast-paced form of e-commerce that delivers products to customers within 10 to 20 minutes. It relies on a network of dark stores or distribution centers to ensure rapid fulfillment of online orders.
Unlike traditional e-commerce, where deliveries may take hours or days, quick commerce focuses on ultra-fast delivery using local warehouses, optimized supply chains, and predictive demand analysis.
Dark stores are small warehouses or fulfillment centers that store essential products near high-demand areas. These stores do not serve walk-in customers but function exclusively for online orders, ensuring faster deliveries.
Customer data helps quick commerce platforms predict demand, optimize inventory, and personalize product recommendations. This data-driven approach allows businesses to stock popular items and enhance customer experience.
Quick commerce became widely popular during the COVID-19 lockdowns when consumers needed instant access to groceries and essentials. The availability of an affordable workforce and rising urban demand have further contributed to its growth.
According to Grant Thornton Bharat, India’s quick commerce market is valued at approximately $3.34 billion and is projected to grow to $9.95 billion by 2029.
Traditional retailers, including small grocery stores, struggle to compete with quick commerce due to deep discounting, predatory pricing, and the large-scale operations of digital platforms. Some small businesses risk closure due to reduced sales.
The All-India Consumer Products Distribution Federation (AICPDF) has filed complaints against major quick commerce players like Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart for alleged anti-competitive practices. Concerns include pricing below cost to eliminate competition and then raising prices once market dominance is achieved.
Experts suggest that while quick commerce is expanding, small retailers can survive by adapting to technology, offering personalized service, and integrating with digital platforms to reach more customers.
With increasing digital adoption, improved logistics, and changing consumer habits, quick commerce is expected to expand rapidly, especially in urban areas. However, regulatory scrutiny and competition from traditional retailers may shape its future.
