The PSLV Orbital Experimental Module (POEM) is a pioneering initiative by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). This project ingeniously repurposes a component of the rocket that is typically discarded — specifically, the fourth stage of the PSLV rocket — transforming it into a functional space lab.
Traditionally, the fourth stage of a rocket, particularly the PSLV, is jettisoned after launching satellites into orbit. However, ISRO's innovative approach allows this stage to continue serving a purpose as a floating laboratory in space. This revolutionary concept was first implemented in June 2022 during the PSLV-C53/DS-EO mission.
POEM-3 represents the third iteration of this ambitious space lab. Its uniqueness lies in its ability to control its orientation in all three spatial dimensions. This capability enhances its functionality, allowing it to generate its own power and establish communication with Earth.
On January 1, 2024, POEM-3 successfully launched a satellite named XPoSat, accomplishing all its intended objectives. This marked another significant milestone for ISRO and the POEM initiative.
POEM-3 is expected to remain in space for approximately 73 more days. After this duration, it will re-enter the Earth's atmosphere. In essence, POEM serves as a temporary space station, utilizing a repurposed rocket component for scientific experimentation instead of allowing it to go to waste.
