The PM SHRI scheme is a centrally sponsored initiative designed to transform existing schools into model institutions that exemplify the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The primary objective of the PM SHRI scheme is to enhance the quality of education while showcasing effective implementation of NEP 2020 across India.
Set to run for five years, the PM SHRI scheme will operate from 2022-23 to 2026-27. Following this period, the responsibility for maintaining the schools will shift to the respective states and Union Territories (UTs).
The curriculum in PM SHRI schools will align with NEP 2020, focusing on holistic development, fostering 21st-century skills, and promoting STEM education.
This scheme aims to cover over 14,500 schools, with the goal of benefiting more than 20 lakh students across the country.
The Central Government has discontinued funding under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) for Delhi, Punjab, and West Bengal. The cessation of funds is due to these states' refusal to sign a memorandum of understanding necessary for implementing PM SHRI.
Currently, Delhi is awaiting ₹330 crore, Punjab ₹515 crore, and West Bengal over ₹1,000 crore under the SSA scheme, which includes pending installments from the 2023-24 fiscal year.
Without a resolution, the refusal to participate in PM SHRI could adversely affect education in these states. Some potential challenges include:
