The Lion Population Estimation is a systematic effort conducted every five years by the government to count Asiatic lions in and around the Gir Sanctuary. This initiative helps track population growth, habitat expansion, and conservation challenges, with the 16th edition taking place in May 2025.
The population of Asiatic lions has shown remarkable growth over the years:
The current estimation is anticipated to show an increase, as lions are now also found across the Greater Gir landscape in Gujarat.
The 2025 estimation covered a vast area:
Although early rains affected some areas, the effort involved extensive fieldwork and coordination.
The census employed various advanced tools to ensure accuracy:
The e-GujForest mobile application facilitated real-time data entry of sightings by forest personnel.
Local communities, NGOs, and over 600 sarpanches played an active role in the estimation. Observers, including interested citizens, were invited to participate in the survey. The Prime Minister has emphasized the importance of community involvement and technology-enabled conservation initiatives.
During the exercise, a pride of 20 lions (12 cubs, 2 males, and 6 lionesses) was documented in Rajsthal Virsi, Bhavnagar district, Gujarat. Some lions were equipped with radio collars to assist in tracking and collecting data on pride behavior and movements.
After the census, the final population figures will be announced by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel following data verification. The findings will inform future conservation and habitat management strategies.
