The Kila Raipur Sports Festival, commonly referred to as the Rural Olympics, is an esteemed annual event held in Kila Raipur village, located in Ludhiana, Punjab. This festival highlights a diverse array of sports and cultural performances, showcasing traditional Punjabi rural sports, including the historically significant bullock-cart races.
Bullock-cart races were banned in 2014 as part of an initiative to prevent cruelty to animals. This decision aligned with the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, which aims to protect animals from harm and mistreatment during such events.
BJP national spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill has urged the Union government to intervene and facilitate the revival of bullock-cart races at the Kila Raipur Sports Festival. He has advocated for the President’s assent to The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Punjab Amendment) Bill, 2019, which was passed by the Punjab Legislative Assembly and would allow the resumption of these races.
The Union government is being called upon to assist in the process of obtaining presidential assent for the aforementioned amendment bill. If passed, this action would legally enable the resumption of bullock-cart races in Punjab, particularly during the Kila Raipur Rural Olympics.
Bullock-cart racing is deeply woven into the fabric of Punjabi culture and heritage, representing traditional rural life and community spirit. It has been an essential attraction at the Kila Raipur Rural Olympics, drawing both participants and spectators from around the globe, while symbolizing the cultural identity of Punjab.
The Rural Olympics are scheduled to occur from February 12 to 14 in Kila Raipur. This event serves as a significant gathering that celebrates the rich cultural and sporting traditions of rural Punjab.
The Kila Raipur Sports Festival has gained international recognition, often referred to as the Mini Olympics. It not only highlights traditional sports but also brings global attention to the rich cultural heritage of Punjab, marking it as a significant event for cultural exchange and tourism.
In addition to bullock-cart races, the Rural Olympics feature an extensive range of both traditional and contemporary sports, including athletics, kabaddi, tug of war, and various strength-based competitions, alongside cultural performances and exhibitions.
