What is Heavy Water?

Heavy water, scientifically referred to as deuterium oxide (D2O), is a variant of water where the hydrogen atoms are substituted with deuterium, a heavier isotope of hydrogen. This subtle alteration significantly changes the characteristics of water, rendering heavy water essential for specific applications, especially within nuclear reactors.

Why is Heavy Water Used in Nuclear Reactors?

Heavy water plays a crucial role in particular categories of nuclear reactors, notably Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs), serving both as a moderator and coolant.

  • Moderator: Heavy water effectively slows down neutrons produced during the process of nuclear fission. As a result, the reactor is capable of utilizing natural uranium as fuel, thus eliminating the need for costly uranium enrichment.
