The 2+2 dialogue marks an annual meeting between India and the United States, engaging discussions at the highest levels involving the ministers of external affairs and defense from both countries. This forum is pivotal for addressing various global and regional issues that concern both nations.
This year, the dialogue will witness the presence of US Secretary of State Antony J Blinken and Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin in New Delhi. Their participation underscores the importance that both countries place on this strategic partnership.
Several significant issues form the crux of this year's dialogue. The strategic India-US relationship remains at the forefront, along with security concerns in the Indo-Pacific region. Discussions will also cover recent geopolitical developments like Russia’s conflict with Ukraine and the collaborative efforts under the India-U.S. Defense Acceleration Ecosystem (INDUS-X).
Canada's recent allegations regarding India's involvement with a militant group have added a new dimension to the discussions. The United States has encouraged India to cooperate with Canada’s investigation, both publicly and privately, reflecting the intricate nature of international relations.
The dialogue is expected to delve into maintaining stability in the Middle East, including ensuring humanitarian access to Gaza. The discussions will also touch on Russia’s military involvements, highlighting the broad spectrum of shared geopolitical interests.
Both nations have expressed concerns over the involvement of the Hamas government in terrorist activities and are committed to preventing the escalation of conflicts, such as those in Gaza. Additionally, they aim to address the challenges posed by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, striving for a peaceful resolution.
The 2+2 dialogue is not a new occurrence. The previous meeting took place in April 2021 in Washington DC. Such high-level engagements have significantly bolstered the bilateral ties between India and the US over the years.
This year’s dialogue is of particular significance against the backdrop of evolving geopolitical dynamics, especially in the Indo-Pacific region. The collaboration between India and the US is essential to devise strategies that protect and promote mutual interests amidst these changes.
