The Godavari-Pennar River Interlinking Project is an ambitious initiative designed to connect the Godavari and Pennar rivers. Its primary goal is to transfer surplus water from the Godavari basin to regions in Andhra Pradesh that are facing water scarcity. This project is a key element of the broader National Perspective Plan for interlinking rivers across India.
As of November 2024, significant progress has been made regarding the project. The central government has given its approval to the proposal put forth by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu for the interlinking of the Godavari and Pennar rivers. This approval marks a crucial advancement towards the actual implementation of the project.
The interlinking project is expected to bring several benefits, particularly in irrigation. It is projected to provide irrigation facilities to an estimated 345,000 to 504,000 hectares of land in the Prakasam, Nellore, Krishna, Guntur, and Chittoor districts of Andhra Pradesh. In addition to enhancing agricultural productivity, the project aims to improve water availability for drinking and industrial uses, thereby fostering regional development.
The Godavari-Pennar link is part of the larger Peninsular Rivers Development Component. This component focuses on interlinking major river systems to facilitate the transfer of surplus water from rivers such as the Mahanadi and Godavari to the Krishna, Pennar, and Cauvery rivers. Such initiatives are vital to addressing the pressing issue of water scarcity in southern regions of the country.
While the project holds promise for significant benefits, it is essential to carefully evaluate its environmental impacts. Potential changes to local ecosystems and the displacement of communities are major concerns that must be addressed. Comprehensive environmental impact assessments and stakeholder consultations will be critical in mitigating these issues and ensuring sustainable project outcomes.
With the central government’s approval secured, the project is set to move forward into the detailed planning and design phases. This will include the preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs), obtaining necessary environmental clearances, and mobilizing financial resources required for construction activities.
