The Global Biofuels Alliance: A Growing Force in Renewable Energy

The Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA) is making significant strides in the renewable energy sector by expanding its reach to 24 countries and 12 international organizations. This expansion reflects the global support and growing momentum of the alliance. Officially launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 9, 2023, during the G20 Summit in New Delhi, GBA aims to unite key biofuel consumers and producers worldwide.

Key Details of the Global Biofuels Alliance

Launched by prominent leaders from nations like the USA, Brazil, Italy, Argentina, Singapore, Bangladesh, Mauritius, and the UAE, GBA has rapidly increased its membership. The alliance is a multi-stakeholder platform focused on capacity building, providing technical support, sharing policies, advancing technology, and implementing international standards in the biofuels sector.

  • Initiatives: The GBA hosts initiatives such as the Biofuels Workshop series and the Biofuels Country Landscapes, which serve as a policy framework.

Achievements and Global Representation

To date, three Temporary Executive Committee (TEC) meetings have been conducted to outline immediate GBA initiatives. The alliance has been represented at major international forums, including COP28, the World Economic Forum, India Energy Week 2024, World Biogas Summit 2024, the Energy Transitions Working Group under G20, and the International Forum on Sustainable Biofuels under the Italian G7 Presidency.

The Role of Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) has emerged as a pivotal component in reducing the aviation industry's environmental impact. SAF is a biofuel with properties similar to conventional jet fuel but offers a significantly smaller carbon footprint. Produced from various feedstocks such as waste oils, agricultural residues, and non-food crops, SAF can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional jet fuel.

  • Challenges: The aviation sector faces challenges in scaling up SAF production, reducing costs, and ensuring a consistent supply of sustainable feedstocks.

India’s Strategic Role in the Biofuels Sector

For India, the GBA presents substantial opportunities. The alliance enhances India’s role as a knowledge base and production hub for biofuels, including ethanol, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), and Compressed Bio Gas (CBG). Active participation in the GBA helps elevate India’s status in the global biofuels industry, fostering international collaboration and innovation.
