Lab-grown meat, often referred to as cultured or cellular meat, is produced by cultivating animal cells in a controlled laboratory environment. This innovative process involves extracting cells from an animal and placing them in a nutrient-rich culture medium, allowing the cells to grow into meat without the necessity of raising and slaughtering animals.
The rising interest in lab-grown meat stems from its potential to address significant issues such as animal welfare, environmental impact, and food security. Compared to traditional livestock farming, lab-grown meat production generates fewer greenhouse gases, requires less water, and diminishes the demand for agricultural land.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is tasked with ensuring food safety standards across the nation. Currently, the authority regulates plant-based protein products but is contemplating extending its regulatory framework to encompass lab-grown meat and dairy. This would ensure that these products conform to health and safety standards before reaching consumers.
Lab-grown meat presents an alternative protein source that is vital for tackling India’s high levels of protein malnutrition. Additionally, it has the potential to alleviate the environmental pressures associated with traditional livestock farming, aligning with sustainable development goals.
Despite its benefits, several challenges hinder the acceptance of lab-grown meat in India. These include high production costs, consumer acceptance, and cultural hesitations. Factors such as taste, texture, and nutritional equivalence to conventional meat also play a crucial role in its acceptance in the Indian market.
Countries like Singapore and Israel have taken the lead in establishing regulatory frameworks for lab-grown meat. Notably, Singapore was the first nation to approve lab-grown chicken, setting a significant precedent for others contemplating similar regulatory approaches.
Indeed, a growing number of Indian startups are exploring the realm of lab-grown and cellular meat production. These enterprises aim to create sustainable meat alternatives and stand to benefit from the FSSAI regulatory framework once it is fully established.
