The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) serves as India's leading agency dedicated to the development of technology tailored for defense applications.
DRDO has reached several significant milestones, including:
The Union government is set to redefine DRDO's role, emphasizing high-end futuristic technologies. A high-powered committee, led by Prof. K. Vijay Raghavan, has been established for this initiative.
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) operates under the U.S. Department of Defense. Unlike DRDO, which maintains its own research facilities, DARPA functions primarily as a funding agency, outsourcing research to universities, industries, and other governmental research institutions.
The Union government plans to reshape DRDO following the DARPA model, which emphasizes funding research over sustaining large in-house laboratories. DARPA's success stems from its strategy to "be the initiator and not the victim of strategic technological surprises."
Reforms aim to enable DRDO to concentrate on cutting-edge technologies, enhance collaboration with private industries, maximize participation from academia and startups, and boost efficiency in defense research and production.
The anticipated reforms are designed to make DRDO more agile, minimize project delays and cost overruns, strengthen connections with academia and the private sector, and position India at the vanguard of defense technology innovation.
