The Female Labour Force Participation Rate (FLFPR) signifies the percentage of women actively participating in the labour force, whether through employment or job-seeking efforts. It acts as a vital indicator of women's economic engagement within a nation.
In the past seven years, the FLFPR has experienced a remarkable increase from 23.3% in 2017-18 to 41.7% in 2023-24. This growth highlights significant progress in women's workforce participation, especially in rural regions.
The notable rise in FLFPR can be largely credited to rural India, where participation surged from 24.6% in 2017-18 to 47.6% in 2023-24. More rural women are entering the workforce, which contributes to the enhancement of various labour market indicators.
Noteworthy progress is evident in seven states and Union Territories that reported FLFPR above 40%, with Sikkim leading at 56.9%. Conversely, three states showed FLFPR below 20%, indicating regional disparities that necessitate targeted interventions.
The Economic Survey underscores that the enhancement in FLFPR, particularly among rural women, has been the main catalyst for overall improvements in labour market indicators. It highlights the critical role of rural women's economic contributions in shaping workforce dynamics.
“True empowerment begins when opportunities reach every corner, and every individual is enabled to contribute to the nation’s progress.”
