The e-Shram portal, launched by the Ministry of Labour and Employment (MoLE) in 2021, serves as a national database aimed at registering unorganised workers, including migrants. Its primary goal is to enhance access to social security and welfare schemes for these workers.
As of the last year, more than 286 million workers have registered on the portal, encompassing approximately 80 million migrant workers.
Migrant workers frequently encounter barriers due to the absence of permanent addresses, Aadhaar cards, mobile numbers, and other essential documentation. Furthermore, the registration system may inadvertently exclude individuals from the most vulnerable groups.
Workers who register on the e-Shram portal gain access to a variety of social security schemes. These include pension plans, health insurance, housing benefits, food security, and employment opportunities, all consolidated under a unified platform.
Notably, female workers constitute 53.59% of those registered on the portal, underscoring a growing awareness of their contributions. However, it remains essential to implement measures that address gender inequalities in social security systems.
The e-Shram portal contributes to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by fostering economic inclusion, enhancing access to social protection, and addressing the inequalities faced by migrant workers.
