Hamas is a Palestinian militant group and political organization established in 1987. Its origins can be traced back to the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist organization founded in Egypt in 1928. The full name of Hamas is Harakat al-Muqawamah al-Islamiyyah, which translates to the Islamic Resistance Movement.
Initially, Hamas held an Islamist vision, focusing on the establishment of a devout Islamic society. Its 1988 charter included anti-Semitic remarks and advocated for the liberation of all of Palestine "from the [Jordan] River to the [Mediterranean] Sea" through jihad. However, in 2017, the organization adopted a new charter, distancing itself from the anti-Semitic rhetoric and indicating a willingness to accept a long-term ceasefire if Israel reverted to the 1967 borders.
Hamas gained prominence following the first intifada in 1987, which was a widespread uprising against Israeli occupation. Unlike the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), which maintained a secular nationalist approach, Hamas presented a religious perspective that resonated with many Palestinians. This shift resulted in Hamas winning a majority of seats in the 2006 legislative elections within the Palestinian territories, further solidifying its political power.
The group has utilized a variety of tactics, including suicide bombings, rocket attacks, and abductions, targeting both military and civilian populations in Israel. Despite facing targeted assassinations of its leaders and being designated a terrorist organization by several nations, Hamas has shown remarkable resilience in its operations.
Hamas currently governs the Gaza Strip, having ousted the Fatah party in 2007. While there have been indications of moderation in its political stance, the organization continues to engage in armed resistance against Israel. It has withstood multiple Israeli offensives and remains a crucial entity in the Palestinian political arena.
The presence and actions of Hamas significantly influence the peace process between Israel and Palestine. Although it has shown some willingness to negotiate, its armed resistance and refusal to recognize Israel complicate efforts to achieve a resolution to the Israel-Palestine issue.
In October 2023, Hamas initiated an unprecedented assault on Israel, referred to as the 'al-Aqsa Flood' operation. This attack resulted in substantial casualties and has reignited focus on the longstanding Israel-Palestine conflict.
Given Hamas's influential role in Palestinian politics and its control over the Gaza Strip, it appears unlikely that a comprehensive solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict can be achieved without addressing the group's involvement.
