Introduction

Ammonium nitrate (NH₄NO₃) is a widely recognized white crystalline compound predominantly utilized as a fertiliser in agriculture and as an industrial chemical in mining and construction sectors. Chemical Behaviour

When subjected to higher temperatures, this compound further breaks down into nitrogen, oxygen, and water. The decomposition process can become unstable, especially under confinement or when contaminated with fuel, potentially leading to an explosive reaction.

In India, ammonium nitrate is regulated under the Explosives Act and the Ammonium Nitrate Rules, 2012. These regulations stipulate the following:
