Strengthening Skies: Garuda 25 Exercise Unites Indian and French Air Forces

In a significant move to enhance defence cooperation, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is actively participating in the 8th edition of the bilateral air exercise 'Garuda 25' alongside the French Air and Space Force (FASF). This collaborative exercise is being conducted from 16 to 27 November 2025, at the Mont-de-Marsan Air Base in France, further solidifying the robust strategic partnership between India and France.

IAF's Strategic Deployment and Key Assets

The IAF contingent arrived in France on 10 November 2025, demonstrating its proficiency in long-range deployment and readiness. For this critical exercise, the IAF has deployed its Su-30MKI multirole fighter aircraft, celebrated for its prowess in air superiority and strike roles. Supporting the airlift and logistical operations are:

  • C-17 Globemaster III: Utilized for transportation during the induction and de-induction phases.
  • IL-78 Flight Refuelling Aircraft: Enhances the operational range and endurance of Su-30MKI fighters through mid-air refueling.

Exercise Objectives and Operational Scope

The Garuda 25 exercise encompasses simulated air combat scenarios with a focus on:

  • Air-to-air engagements
  • Air defence operations
  • Joint strike missions

These drills are meticulously designed to replicate realistic combat situations, allowing both air forces to refine tactics, improve coordination, and boost interoperability in joint operations. The exercise also delves into doctrines related to multi-domain integration and network-centric warfare.

Significance of Exercise Garuda

This high-caliber bilateral air drill serves multiple key purposes:

  • Mutual Learning: Enhancing tactical knowledge and technical familiarity.
  • Operational Interoperability: Establishing frameworks for combined missions and seamless cooperation.
  • Strengthening Defence Ties: Reinforcing India-France military collaboration under strategic defence and security agreements.
  • Professional Exchange: Facilitating deeper bonds through interaction, exchange of ideas, and sharing of best practices.

Garuda 25 reaffirms both nations' commitment to a rules-based international order and underscores the importance of joint preparedness in a dynamic global security landscape.
