The groundwater crisis in India has emerged as a pressing concern, particularly in urban areas where groundwater supports nearly half of the population. Issues such as nitrate contamination, poor waste management, and over-extraction have significantly compromised the availability and quality of this vital resource, as detailed in the Annual Groundwater Quality Report 2022.
Several factors are at play when it comes to the declining quality of groundwater in India. The excessive use of fertilizers, inadequate sewage treatment, and the discharge of industrial effluents have been identified as primary contributors. For instance, in 2021, India produced approximately 72,368 million liters of sewage each day, yet only 31,841 million liters were treated. This disparity has led to severe water pollution.
Particular states in India are experiencing acute groundwater issues. Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu exhibit high levels of nitrate contamination due to agricultural practices, while Haryana and Karnataka are nearing critical groundwater depletion.
Technological advancements offer promising avenues for addressing the groundwater crisis. Innovations such as smart water networks powered by IoT, artificial intelligence for monitoring water quality, and decentralized wastewater treatment systems at the community level can drastically enhance groundwater conservation efforts.
Effective wastewater management is crucial in tackling the groundwater crisis. By reclaiming treated wastewater for non-potable uses and minimizing pollution through advanced treatment facilities, we can foster a circular water cycle that supports sustainable water use.
Cities can implement sustainable practices such as artificial aquifer recharge, rainwater harvesting, and efficient water usage methodologies, alongside decentralized waste treatment systems, to ensure long-term sustainability in water management.
To effectively combat the groundwater crisis, India must prioritize climate-resilient infrastructure, advocate for modular water treatment systems, enforce stricter regulations on industrial waste management, and encourage community participation in groundwater conservation initiatives.
