Indian researchers have developed a groundbreaking artificial intelligence framework that promises to revolutionize cancer diagnosis and treatment by analyzing the disease at a molecular level. Created at the S N Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences in collaboration with Ashoka University, this innovative tool provides a pathway to highly personalized cancer therapies.
The framework, known as OncoMark, shifts the focus from traditional cancer staging to the biological programs that drive tumor growth. These programs, referred to as the hallmarks of cancer, are crucial in determining how cells become malignant, spread throughout the body, evade immune responses, and resist treatment. By decoding these mechanisms, OncoMark offers deeper insights into why patients with similar cancer stages may experience significantly different outcomes.
Researchers conducted an extensive examination of 3.1 million single cells across 14 different cancer types. They developed synthetic "pseudo-biopsies" to map hallmark-driven tumor states, enabling the AI model to understand the interactions of processes like metastasis, immune evasion, and genomic instability. This comprehensive dataset formed the basis for training OncoMark to identify unique molecular patterns across various cancers.
OncoMark achieved remarkable results, attaining over 99 percent accuracy in internal testing and maintaining above 96 percent accuracy across five independent cohorts. It was validated using a dataset of 20,000 patient samples from eight global studies. For the first time, scientists visualized how hallmark activity intensifies as cancer progresses, allowing for the identification of aggressive tumors that may appear less threatening under standard clinical staging.
By revealing which hallmarks are active within a tumor, the OncoMark framework can guide clinicians toward therapies targeting specific biological processes. This innovative approach not only enhances the early detection of aggressive cancers but also supports the principles of precision medicine, marking a significant advancement in India’s contribution to global cancer research.
