The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has initiated an innovative strategy to address the pressing issues of algal blooms and foul odour plaguing the Hussain Sagar Lake. This approach involves the application of advanced bioremediation techniques using enzyme solutions and biochar-based Bokashi balls, aiming to enhance the water quality of this significant water body.
Hussain Sagar Lake, an artificial reservoir in Hyderabad, Telangana, is commonly known as Tank Bund. It rests on a tributary of the River Musi and spans an impressive area of 5.7 square kilometers, making it one of the largest man-made lakes in Asia. Notably, it is recognized for its heart-shaped formation among the numerous heart-shaped lakes and islands globally.
The lake was constructed during the reign of Ibrahim Quli Qutub Shah by Hussain Shah Wali in 1562 AD. A prominent feature of the lake is the monolithic statue of Lord Buddha, which majestically stands at its center. Historically, the lake played a crucial role in connecting the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad and was used for irrigation and drinking water until 1930.
Over the decades, the water quality of Hussain Sagar Lake has deteriorated due to the influx of untreated sewage and industrial waste through the nalas feeding into the lake. This has necessitated the introduction of innovative measures to restore its ecological balance and aesthetic value.
The adoption of bioremediation efforts is a significant step towards reclaiming the lake's former glory, ensuring that it continues to be a vital and cherished landmark in Hyderabad.
