R Praggnanandhaa is an 18-year-old Indian Grandmaster who has made significant strides in the chess world. Recently, he registered his first-ever classical win over World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen.
Praggnanandhaa's victory over Carlsen in the third round of Norway Chess 2024 was momentous as it marked his first classical win against the World Champion, propelling him to the sole leader's position in the tournament.
Playing with white pieces, Praggnanandhaa managed to overcome Carlsen despite trailing on the clock for most of the game. His calm and strategic play enabled him to secure the win and earn three crucial points.
Following his loss to Praggnanandhaa, Carlsen slipped to fifth in the six-man standings in the open section of Norway Chess.
R Vaishali, Praggnanandhaa's sister, is leading the women's section after three rounds. She beat compatriot Koneru Humpy and held GM Anna Muzychuk to a draw to retain her sole lead position.
Norway Chess offers USD 160,000 in prize funds for both the Open and Women's sections. The tournament features six players competing in classical chess from May 27 to June 7.
