The Gangetic dolphin (Platanista gangetica) plays a vital role in maintaining the balance of the river ecosystem. These dolphins help regulate energy flow, and their presence is crucial for sustaining fish and crustacean populations. However, their numbers are dwindling, raising concerns among conservationists.
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Gangetic dolphin is classified as endangered due to a significant decline in its population. With estimates ranging between 2,500 and 5,000 individuals, habitat loss remains a pressing issue for their survival.
To counter this decline, scientists have proposed a comprehensive conservation strategy that spans the entire Ganga basin. This strategy emphasizes the importance of smaller rivers and tributaries, identifying 620 km of river stretches as priorities for conservation efforts.
In the post-monsoon seasons of 2022 and 2023, extensive surveys were conducted across 1,290 km of the Ganga basin's tributaries and sub-tributaries. These surveys aimed to assess the distribution, population numbers, and habitat suitability for the Gangetic dolphin.
Several challenges hinder conservation efforts, including the construction of dams and barrages, pollution from agricultural run-offs, and both intentional and accidental killings. Other threats include increased sediment deposition, mechanized boat traffic, and the impacts of climate change.
Smaller rivers are home to more than 15% of the Gangetic dolphin population. They contribute to habitat diversity, providing resilience to the larger river systems and supporting essential ecological processes.
Conservation measures focus on habitat protection and restoration. Key actions include mitigating threats like overfishing and net entanglement, promoting community engagement, and initiating awareness programs. Additionally, research and monitoring efforts are crucial to this strategy.
Engaging local communities and stakeholders is crucial for successful conservation. This involves promoting sustainable practices and raising awareness about the importance of protecting the Gangetic dolphin.
