In a significant achievement for eco-tourism in India, Odisha's Sunapur and Puri beaches have once again been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag Certification for the year 2025-26. This international recognition reaffirms their status as some of the cleanest and most environmentally sustainable beaches worldwide.
The Blue Flag is a globally recognized eco-label presented by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) based in Denmark. It is given to beaches, marinas, and sustainable boating tourism operators that meet 33 strict criteria covering water quality, environmental management, safety standards, and eco-education and awareness. Only coastal destinations that consistently maintain high environmental and safety standards are eligible for this certification.
Thirteen beaches in India were recognized in the latest Blue Flag list, with twelve receiving full certification, including Sunapur and Puri from Odisha. This reinforces India's commitment to sustainable coastal tourism and eco-certification.
The success of these beaches can be attributed to local participation, strict implementation of waste management systems, and investment in green tourism infrastructure. Efforts of the local administration and villagers in maintaining the ecosystem have been particularly commendable. Both beaches offer trained lifeguards and paramedics, wheelchair-accessible pathways, zero liquid discharge waste systems, CCTV monitoring, safety surveillance, and environmental education kiosks to ensure visitors enjoy a clean, safe, and informative beach experience.
Thirteen beaches in India were recognized in the latest Blue Flag list, with twelve receiving full certification. Sunapur is located at the confluence of the Bahuda River and the Bay of Bengal.
