NAKSHA, or National Geospatial Knowledge-based Land Survey of Urban Habitations, is a significant initiative under the Digital India Land Records Modernisation Programme (DILRMP). This program is spearheaded by the Department of Land Resources (DoLR), part of the Ministry of Rural Development. Its primary goal is to establish a comprehensive geospatial database for urban land records by employing aerial and field surveys through GIS technology.

The pilot project encompasses 152 urban local bodies across 26 states in India, surveying a total area of 4,142.63 square kilometers of the country’s urban land, which totals approximately 1.02 lakh square kilometers.
NAKSHA is fully funded by the central government. The estimated cost for the pilot project is around ₹194 crore.
