Uttar Pradesh has made a groundbreaking move towards inclusive education by inaugurating the state's inaugural Braille library, specifically designed for individuals with visual impairments. This facility, located at Dr Shakuntala Mishra National Rehabilitation University in Lucknow, aims to enhance access to quality academic resources and promote independence and dignity among visually impaired learners.
The Braille library is situated on the first floor of the Swami Vivekananda Central Library within the university campus. Vice-Chancellor Acharya Sanjay Singh inaugurated the initiative, calling it a significant milestone in advancing equal educational opportunities. This initiative is in line with the vision of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, emphasizing “education for all” as a fundamental governance objective.
Currently, the library boasts over 4,000 books in Braille. This collection has been curated following the National Education Policy and encompasses 54 undergraduate and postgraduate courses offered by the university. All academic materials have been printed using the university's in-house Braille press, ensuring consistent quality and relevance to Indian curricula. This approach minimizes reliance on external suppliers and guarantees timely access to study resources.
During the inauguration ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor paid tribute to Louis Braille on his birth anniversary. He encouraged visually impaired students to strive for self-reliance and assertiveness in education and employment. Additionally, he instructed the university administration to enhance modern computer training facilities, ensuring students remain connected with mainstream education and the evolving job market.
Beyond serving university students, the library extends its resources to visually impaired individuals from the broader community through casual and corporate membership options. It features a spacious reading hall accommodating over 150 students. By offering its services beyond the campus, the facility is poised to become a vital resource center for inclusive education and rehabilitation across the state.
